6 Bar Showjumping Competition - Globe Derby - 6th January 2001 |
|
Saturday night featured
the return of the 6 Bar Showjumping Competition held between races at Globe Derby Harness
racing track. Each year after the South Australian Championships the Six Bar Competition
is held as a display of equestrian riding at the Harness Racing Summer Carnival. The
feature race highlights of the night were the Pacers Cup and the SA Trotters Cup with the
appearance of top pacer Safe and Sound a major drawcard. As the longshots won on the track it was a battle between old and young in the showjumping. Junior riders Ben & Randall Jolley and Lachlan Manuel made it through to the final round to jumpoff against senior riders including Clive Reed, Gareth Heron, Nick Crowe and Ron Harland. Fox Mulder ridden by Nick Crowe went first and successfully cleared the 6 uprights (to see the huge height of the final fence please refer to the photo of Fox Mulder jumping). Faultline ridden by Ben Jolley seemed a touch off stride coming into the last fences and refused the last in the final second. Little Casper and Randall Jolley had a smoother approach but they too stopped at the last though the fence towered above Little Casper. The mounts of Clive Reed and Ron Harland both stopped at the final fence and they retired at the first refusal. Lachlan Manuel and Cutloose (formerly a successful racehorse and still learning about showjumping) clipped the final rail to record four faults with Gareth Heron riding Terrific doing likewise. The final placings were Fox Mulder and Nick Crowe in first place, Terrific and Gareth Heron in second and Cutloose and Lachlan Manuel taking third. |
