2009 was the 12th straight SA Horse of the Year I have
photographed and over the years horses and riders come and go but this
year saw three horses that have been around seemingly forever. K
Probert's Mirinda Regatta won the SA Show Hunter Large Pony award for
the previous 5 years and although this year he was second it was a
fantastic effort with a near perfect workout. Winner S
Langridge's Oaklands Park Lucky Charm did a faultless job to wrestle the
title away with N Karutz's Kaylee Centrefold third. The
second to return year in and out is C&A Hunt's Gryffindor who has made
the Champion Show Hunter class his own recording his 4th successive
victory in the event from K Norris' Occasion with M&N Bruggemann's
Brookman Park Indulgence third. Gryffindor was also runner up in
2005. The third of the trio is Flawless ridden by Leanne Donoghue
who has won the final event of the show the SA Large Show Horse of the
Year for four years in a row this year he again defeated C Lawrie's
Black Tie (second in 2008) with R Lawrie's Bond was third.
The rider classes started
the two day show with the Rider Under 10 years going to S Tickner from
last years winner M Pagon with J Bruggemann third. Stacey
Faehrmann took out the Junior Rider under 14 years for the second year
in succession from Nicole Metcalfe with Kelly Smith third. In the
Intermediate rider 14-18 years Tess Hughes followed up her success in
2008 and her Under 14 years award in 2007 with another victory with
Emily Dennis second and Naomi Karutz third. The Senior Rider over
18 years went to Melissa Karutz from Rachel Lawrie with Cassandra White
third. Melissa Karutz had previously taken out the Junior Rider
14-18 years in 2005 and the under 14 years award in 2002 & 2000.
The Newcomer classes started
in the early 2000's and are for horses in their first year of showing
with a few of the previous winners returning to win open classes this
year. A Anderson's Kolbeach Memoir won the Newcomer Pony award in
2006 and this year took out the Owner-Rider Pony ne 12hh and the SA
Small Pony of the Year (for the second year in succession) with B
Forster's Mondiso Park Peeping Tom runner up in both classes (was also
second in 2008 in Pony of the year) with H Clarke-Smith's Fairlight
Acres Alpha in third in the Owner-Rider and V&C Fricker's Silkwood
Nutkin third in the SA Small Pony of the Year class. I&F Barker's
Rivington Royal Hiccup who won the Newcomer Show Hunter Pony award in
2006 went on this year to be successful in the Champion Show Hunter
Small Pony of the Year from I Barker's Rivington Windchime with E
Kakoschke's Murraydale Park Delta third. This year the SA Newcomer
Small Pony of the year was taken out by A Kerslake's Springwood Far Away
Moon from D Jolly-Blacket's Wynara Butterfly Kisses and Sue Castley's
Argyl Royal Dancer. The SA Newcomer Large Pony of the Year went to
S Jaeschke's Rosedale Wembley with second going to L Donoghue & J Best's
Hollys Work of Art with D Walker-Matthews' Langtree Romanza third.
The Newcomer Galloway of the Year was won by B Dudley's Wesswood Lets
Twist from J Gale & C Scott's About Town with S Kempe's Willowcroft
Safari third. The SA Newcomer Show Horse of the Year was taken out
by B William's Rosevale Design from T Silver's Stratford Casino which
was having only his third show outing with D Moir's Sanlirra Cavalier
third.
A more recent addition to
the Newcomer classes are the Newcomer Show Hunter classes. The SA
Newcomer Show Hunter Pony of the Year was awarded to T Hughes' Forever
Young from E Kakoschke's Murraydale Park Delta with F Barker's Rivington
Windchime third. A Forster's Yindarla Park Icon won the SA
Newcomer Show Hunter Galloway from L Grigg's Wynara Emblem while the SA
Newcomer Show Horse of the Year went to A Donaldson's Danson Destiny
from C Ashby's Rossington with A Merry's PS Luxottica third.
In the Owner-Rider Pony
12.2hh to 14hh it was a repeat of 2008 where S Jaeschke's Hollys Plays
took the prize from S Faehrmann's Kolbeach Peter Pan with third going to
R Dodson's Mirinda Lord of the Rings. M Parij's Kolbeach Fanfare
took out the Owner-Rider Galloway from E Williams' Kolbeach Marine with
third going to E Dennis' Lawlington Park Rendition. The
Owner-Rider Show Horse was won by C White's CKSecret Affairs from R
Lawrie's Bond with C Young's Fifth Avenue third.
Brand new classes added to
the HOTY program this year were the Graduate Garland events for horses
that have not won at Royal level & equivalent. The Graduate
Garland Small Pony of the Year was taken out by H Clarke-Smith's
Fairlight Acres Alpha from M,N&J Bruggemann's Brookman Park Dparkling
Tiara while the Graduate Garland Large Pony went to Argyl Stud's
Kolbeach Showgirl from E Harrison's Willowcroft Royal Emerald with R
Dodson's Mirinda Lord of the Rings third. S Pollard's Kolbeach
Review was named Graduate Garland Galloway of the Year from C McKenzie's
DQ Etchings and J Gale's About Town while the Graduate Garland Hack of
the Year was awarded to R Maitland's TM Memphis from C Young's Fifth
Avenue and B William's Rosevale Design.
The SA Leading Rein Pony of
the Year was again a keenly contested event with a huge field lining up.
Victory went to V&C Fricker's Rivington Titmouse for the second year in
a row from I&F Barker's Rivington Royal Hiccup with V&C Fricker's
Silkwood Nutkin third.
The Champion Show Hunter
Galloway of the Year was awarded to G Manning's Janevelyn McCree from A
Forster's Yindarla Park Icon with D Jolly-Blacket's Wynara Tounch of
Bronze third. Janevelyn McCree won the Owner-Rider Galloway in
2005 and on the day was the ideal example of what a show hunter should
be. A Show Hunter should be a strong horse able to be hunted over
any kind of terrain and must have impeccable manners - Janevelyn McCree
hadn't been ridden for a few weeks and off a 20 minute warm up put in a
winning workout on the day.
The award for the SA Large
Pony of the Year went to C Lawrie & A Penalurick's Kolbeach Be Free from
S Jaeschke's Hollys Plays with Argyl Stud's Kolbeach Showgirl third.
K Nusbajtel & A Giustozzi's Mirinda Versaillies followed up success in
2008 with a second straight victory in the SA Galloway of the Year with
V Lawrie & A Penalurick's Kolbeach Designer second with M Parij's
Kolbeach Fanfare third. The SA Small Show Horse of the Year went
to M Haynes' Chapel, who stepped up from third in the event last year,
from M Haynes' other entrant Water Lily with W Cock's Shanlin Regal
Beaus third.
