| The
first recorded winner is Adit who won in 1928 when the distance was 2 miles 181 yeards but
records indicate the race was previously run from 1895 over a distance of 2 miles and 3
1/2 chains.
The best known winner of this event is the chestnut Zama Lad. He dominated the event winning the race 4 times from 1982 to 1985 and also recorded victory in the 1985 Grand National Hurdle. When he was retired he became a clerk of the course mount for the SAJC and led future champion Rubiton back to scale after his first start and victory. In 1992 that seasons dominant hurdler Hip Flask was successful. Royally bred Hip Flask didn't show his true ability until he started over the jumps. In 1992 he also won the Grand National Hurdle and Moonee Valley Hurdle before a wrenched joint caused a long spell and his eventual retirement. In 1997 the first season jumper Idea was successful for the John Hawkes stable with Down to Zero scoring in 1998. Down To Zero made the successful transition to steeplechases and was a well fancied in the 2000 Great Eastern until he was brought down by stablemate March Past in the first lap of the event. He returns again this year as part of the huge Eric Musgrove contigent. We Ourselves was the first horse since Zama Lad to record multiple wins in 1999 and 2000. He was on target to return for an attempt for a third victory but jarred up in a recent race and wasn't forward enough for the testing course.
