The main flat race on Monday is the Onkaparinga Cup which was first run in 1876. The winner that year was Nightingale ridden by McNamara and he repeated the feat in 1877. The next multiple winner was Water Pistol ridden by R Medhurst in 1927 and 1928.
After he retired for racing How Brave became a showjumper with Michelle Clark before being retired to a paddock. Some time later he was offered to the Manuel family to use as a mount for young showjumping riders Sheridan and Lachlan. How Brave was ridden to victory in one of the main junior classes at the South Australian Showjumping Championships in December 2000. Hollinger ridden by W Sharp took out the race twice in 1986 and 1988 before Adelaide Cup winner Water Boatman won in 1990 and 1991 ridden by P Hutchinson.
The 1993 winner Wild Visions became a clerk of the course mount and when I last checked could still be found performing these duties on racedays. The 1997 race was won by Barossa Babe who is now at stud and will soon have progeny of racing age with the 1998 event taken out by Just Anything ridden by Marie Payne.
The last two years Frenzel Rhomb has been succesful in the race and he showed that he was on the verge of returning to winning form with a fast finishing effort at his last start.
