Adelaide Royal Show 2006 |
|
|
The first Friday in September and that means the first day of the Royal Adelaide Show for 2006. This year this report will be in sectioned into the various categories such as Ponies, Galloways, Hack, Riders, Showjumpers, etc The grounds again look magnificent and it was one of the warmest starts to a Royal in recent years with sunny weather in the mid 20s. Classes featured on the first day were the Ponies, Junior rider classes, Showjumping and the Police events and all will have their own pages further in this report. Saturday was even warmer as the Galloways came to prominence while on Sunday the Champion Ponies were awarded. Sunday also saw the Leading Rein Class and Smartest on Parade. The cold weather hit soon after with overcast conditions on Monday and although Tuesday started well by lunch the rain started and it poured in the late afternoon and evening all through the Novice Hack events and Novelties, the latter being run for the first time as part of the evening program in the main arena. Wednesday morning saw the majority of the Hack events interspersed with showers and sunny breaks while the Showjumpers prepared for the World Cup round scheduled for lunchtime. Through the light showers Gavin Chester and his grey Warlord II proved superior taking out the round before showjumping action moved on to the Metro Showjumping Club at Glenelg. Action on Thursday saw the Pairs of Riders 14-18 and Over 18 plus a number of Hack events as the weather turned bitterly cold and on Friday the Champion Galloway, Champion Show Hunter and Champion Hack were presented plus the inaugural running of the Horsepower vs Horsepowa event. On the final Saturday the Breeds took centre stage in the main arena. After the equestrian events
had finished for the afternoon the pinkcoats - who usually have the sedate
job of calmly leading the classes out onto the arena and then escorting the
winners back after the events - took on a Holden Stormrider Ute in a four
lap race of the length of the main arena. The ute had to make four
laps and turn around at each end while the pinkcoats rode one lap each in a
relay. The first two riders and the ute were level pegging but when
Greg Willoughby riding 'Blackie' poured on the pace the pinkcoats gained an
advantage which was maintained to the line. The pinkcoats were
presented with the blue ribbons and the ute was sashed with the red second
place ribbon. All then continued on a victory lap of the main arena. |
