ADELAIDE ROYAL SHOW
South Australia
31st August - 8th September, 2001

Adelaide Royal Day 8

Friday opened with sunny skies and warm weather but by the time the classes were over the rain had returned to turn the main arena into a bog for the second year running for the Breed Day on the final day of the show. During the judging of the Champion Lady Rider the clouds started to darken and the bolts of lightning could be seen the two different directions from the main grandstand. Minutes after the award had been decided and while competitors were working out in the Lightweight Hack class the wind gusted before the rain came down soon turning into a thunderstorm then hail. Despite the weather the Lightweight Hack was decided before everyone dashed for cover to wait for a break or at least an easing in the weather. Meanwhile in the surrounding suburbs of Adelaide many trees were brought down with a power sub station affected by lightning (too far away to affect the Royal). In the week of the Royal Show Adelaide has reportedly had its wettest start to spring and September on record. An hour after the deluge started the rain eased slightly to constant showers as entrants in the Pair of Riders and Pony Club Showjumping which were conducted under the lights of the main arena. Unfortunately there are no photos from Lightweight Hack onwards on Friday as conditions were too dark and wet for the camera equipment to function properly. At lunch there was a break in the equestrian classes as Jason Leith - The Aussie Stockman put on a display of riding a horse without a saddle or bridle before riding a Brahmin Bull in the main arena.

Victorious was Maurice Beatson and Duty Free who hardly put a foot wrong throughout. Second was Kylie Anne Beythein and Glenwood with Robert Atkinson and Betula Star third. The Junior Grand Prix was conducted at lunch with Andrew Long riding Cross Ply winning from Kristy Bruhn riding Monkey Mia and Leigh Shera-Jones and Fair Dinkum third. The Pony Club Showjumping class is jumped as one class but the prize are decided in two divisions for Junior riders and for senior/associate riders. The Junior award was taken out by Tamika Lyons and Rio Grande from Kelly James and Riverside Rising River with Bojangles and Sarah Willoughby third. The Senior/Associate class went to Kristy Lewis in first with Larry and second with Ned while Abigail Goodman riding Foobah Woobah was third. The Most Successful Showjumping Horse award went to R Stubing's Willy Go while Rebekka Stubing and Rebecca Crack tied for the award of Most Successful Junior Showjumping Rider.

The Harness had three classes all decided in the morning. First was the Pleasure Harness Horse or Pony going to Ashwood Stud's Makari Search For Gold while The Pleasure Pony ne 13hh went to L Knuchel's Owendale Tristan. The final Harness class of the Royal was for Harness Horse, galloway or pony pair with victory going to M & J Drury's Drumeden Cody and Impact.

The Champion Galloway Hack award was decided in the morning with Lyndale Stables and L Warburton's KB Superstar taking the prize while CA Matherson's Yarramie Ant's Pants was named Reserve. The Champion Hack went to L McMaster's South Australian bred thoroughbred Sequel with Lyndale Stables and T Van Heythuysen's Kings was named the Reserve. The Heavyweight Hack went to L Coles' Bartonero from J Best's Anthem and M Whittmore's Pele Prince. The Lightweight Hack judged in the full brunt of the thunderstorm went to G Crocker's Akhtar from P Verco's Inferno and Susie Verco's Esteem but all who competed (and the officials) in the conditions really should have deserved some sort of prize for staying out there. The Heavyweight Galloway Hack was decided late in the afternoon with P Barratt's Mirinda Matador successful from Fiona Graham's Sanlirra Delight and Tara Carroll's Fairfield Great Waltz.

The Champion Junior Rider 14 to 18 years went to J Librio while Rebecca Groen took the Reserve. The Champion Lady Rider was taken out for the second year running by South Australian rider Penny Verco riding Inferno with S Hangar being named as the Reserve Champion with an impressive workout. The Pair of Riders 14 to 18 years went to Rebecca Groen and Katrina Metherall from CJ Growden and Vanessa Hajek with Tara Carroll and Sarah Lindeman third. The Pair of Riders 18 years and over went to MJ Stuart and P Verco who have made this award their own in recent years after dominating in the younger age group in previous years. Second was AS Ansaldi and N Milton with third going to Emilie Harrision and J Slater.

The Novelties closed the equestrian events with the Star Banner Memorial Bending Race with victory going to Heidi Bruggemann's Evil Angel from C Willing's Fanmail and C Lang's Barastoc Red Robin. The Star Banner Memorial Flag and Barrel race went to D Viceban's Lady Luck from Barastoc Red Robin and K Rehn's Hot Shot. The Best Performed Novelty Horse was awarded to Barastoc Red Robin.
